Dr. James Kelly is a 1987 graduate of Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (Bachelor of Sciences in Biology). He earned his Doctorate in Optometry from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana in 1991. His internships included rotations at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Danville, IL and Medical Clinic at Fort Ord Army Base in Monterey, CA. Rotations in Low Vision, Sports Vision, and Pediatric Care/Visual Therapy were at Indiana University clinics in Indianapolis and Bloomington, IN. Dr. Kelly was certified in the Medical Diagnosis and Treatment of Eye Disease in 1993 from the Illinois College of Optometry.
Dr. Kelly was an independent leasing doctor in a corporate optical for 10 years in Glen Ellyn, IL and was their Chicago-Area Doctor of the Year in 2001. He was voted Glen Ellyn's "Best Optometrist" in the Glen Ellyn News Readers Choice Awards in 2012. Articles detailing some difficult cases he handled have appeared in national optometric newsletters and magazines. He has a loyal following of patients from all over Chicagoland. Many of his patients who have moved out of state or out of the country still schedule their annual eye examinations with him!
One of the biggest reasons that his patients are so loyal is his ability to convey that each person is very important to him. "The most important set of eyes to me are the ones I'm looking at in my chair," He relates "People have many choices in eye care, and when they choose to see me, I'm quite flattered. The way to keep that person within my practice is to simply do things the right way- all the time."
One of the greatest accomplishments in his practice is the development of strong inter-professional relationships with medical practitioners in the area. Dr. Kelly receives referrals from many local physicians and has an amazing number of physicians, nurses, dentists, podiatrists, physical therapists, and chiropractors as patients. Everyone’s eyes are important, but it says a lot about our practice to care for so many other health care providers and their families.
Dr. Kelly is terrific with kids and he performs examinations on children ages 5 and older. A first eye exam can be scary for kids and Dr. Kelly makes it fun while being very thorough.
Dr. Kelly is married with 3 daughters. A resident of Wheaton, he is active in his church and plays ice hockey and golf. He is a member of the West Suburban Optometric Society and provides community services. He is honored to provide eye care for the Willow Creek Care Center Eye Clinic and the Glen Ellyn Lions Club. "The Lions Club partners with us to provide the gift of sight to people who don't have the means otherwise." Our office also collects used spectacles, inkjet cartridges, cell phones, and hearing aids for the Lions.
